It's a GUYS' night out !
When Andy (AIESEC trainee from UK) suggested for go to the horse-racing in Happy Valley, I was too tempted to say no, even though it means that I'm the only girl going with a handful of guys ( 7 Europeans and few other local guys). First reason being : I never watch a horse-racing before ..on live, I mean! Another being I want to give everything a try before I said 'no'. Especially now when I'm on a traineeship in a foreign land, everything is new to me. I do not want to shut down something I never try. The horse-racing rink is huge, I mean massive huge and I'm suprised to see a lot of Europeans around ( my initial thought was to expect lots of local gamblers). The whole hightlight of the horse-racing was only for the few seconds - right before the jockeys reach the finishing lines where the gamblers will shout for their bets. Andy won 6 dollars from his bet , better than none :)
We got off a while later because none of us are major gamblers and we got a little bit bored. The next destination we went is a little interesting. We went to Wan Chai ( where all the pubs and clubs concentrated ). Before this visit to Wan Chai, I was curious to find out the place especially once Philip ( French trainee ) told me that " Lan Kwai Fong is for the good girls and good boys and Wan Chai is for the bad girls and bad boys." Wouldn't you be enticed more to check out Wan Chai after such comments ? We first went to this club called " Klong " to meet up Michelle and friends. Once I was in the club, I quickly grabbed what Philips meant, even when I was walking on the street in Wan Chai. Wan Chai reminds me on the red light district in Thailand and a street in Patong Beach in Phuket. Along the street you'll be entertained by the non-local girls ( I'm not sure of their nationality but their features tell me they are either Thais, Philipines or South-East Asian girls) wearing very little clothes standing in front of their shops awaiting for customers. All along the streets or in the pubs or clubs, you can hardly find any locals. There are only Europeans , white men and the south-east asian babes. Just like when I was in Patong beach in Phuket, I can find none Thais except for the shop owners. All others who occupied the street are only Europeans and Caucasians. Once I got into the "Klong", I felt uneasy. It's not like my first visit to clubs or pubs. Back in KL, I club occasionally and I enjoy it.. the music, the dance. But here in Wan Chai, I felt like I'm one of the girls waiting to be picked up by the desperate white men. And when we got off from this club to go to another one, there are even girls dancing on the table ..interesting and almost sexy ... almost but not quite. Finally Andy (British), Josin (US), Niko & Yurgo ( from Greece ), Johan ( Swedish ) , Kian ( British ) and me settled down at a place where we can finally sit down properly and get a drink whereby Michelle and her girlfriends stayed at the other club for more dancing. The previous places are just so darn crowded and it was only Wednesday night ( imagine how would it be like on weekends ! ). I didn't realized I was drinking a little more than my usual volume until I went back home feeling my room going upside down. A free vodka coke for the ladies from the first pub and a bottle of Corona ( I still dislike drinking beer but it's the cheapest! ) makes my head spin. Now that I've been to Wan Chai, I would say my preference still go to Lan Kwai Fong. I'm not too much of a pubs or clubs goer. I enjoy occasional drinks in the pub but not a die-hard club goer who visit on every weekends. I no longer see the point nor does the activity spell the word 'meaningful' to me. Too much of anything spoils everything I guess.
Too many of GUYS'night out makes me anticipated for the outing this weekend where girls are the dominating ones :)

Beer is good! You just have to know your taste that's all. A small guide...
Carlsberg - default "uncle" beer, until the very nice "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" ad campaign. Then everyone drank it. The standard beer everyone drinks, goes down moderately well, average kick, no bitter aftertaste... hell everything is moderate for this baby. Like your Nescafe 3-in-1 "Red". The beer to drink when you have no other choice.
Carl's Reserve - Smoother than Carlsberg. Tendered for the young. Cool bottle design makes sure you're in the "in" crowd.
Budweiser - THE American beer. Possibly the best tasting beer among all, and smooth as a whistle too. It's very ex in M'sia, so drink all you can there! Cheap! I've done research!
Heineken - NOW we're talking. Targeting the young exec crowd, the "sophisticated" beer with a generous kick at the end that isn't to everyone's tastes. But it's the most "in" beer right now. Not too smooth, so you take longer to drink... but think about it... value for money! My personal fave.
Asahi - Jap Beer 101. The smoothest beer in creation. So smooth you can almost drink it like water. Not much kick. Girls might like this. I once drank 2 cans of this in 48 seconds.
Skol - New contender, claims to be the No.3 brand in Europe. Fuller-bodied than Carlsberg but lacks the kick of Heineken... something in between la. No one drinks this yet so if you want to be a trendsetter...
Tiger - Tried to be smooth, but lost out to Budweiser and Asahi, tried to be full-bodied, but tastes generally hollow. Some might even cry diluted. The mediocre beer. For when you feel depressed.
Gunniess Stout - Cool Adam King ad campaign aside, avoid. Now the "uncle" drink after Carlsberg and Liverpool became cool again. Drink this and people will call you "uncle" or "auntie". You wouldn't want that now.
Oh wow Ah Lau, so much of an expert ... even more expert than my German friend ! I dont know but I guess it's a girl thing ( or Asian girls' thing) of not liking to drink beer because we are all sugar babe ;) Nah, I just dislike the bitterness of the beer. I've tried another Philipino beer called " San Miguel" here in HK ....not too bad but yet, a fruit punch make Grace a happier gal :) Oh thanks for the tips anyway, I'll pass down it to my beer-loving friends !
gal, you should try swisly ( if you could find it there ). beer made in switzerland - most girls like :)
oh really ? I doubt I can find it here in HK ... but your advice been taken ! :)
